Application Materials

We are committed to creating a diverse student body, and welcome applications from underrepresented groups. A complete list of diversity programs/resources can be found online via Graduate Studies. Applications are accepted for fall quarter admission only. Applications must be completed by December 1st.

The following application materials are required and should be submitted online by the deadline:

  • Completed online application.
  • Academic records for every college-level institution you have attended or are currently attending (including community college, transfer coursework, study abroad, summer session, etc.). You may upload your transcripts in the Academic History section of the application *or* after submitting your application using your Application Status Page.
    • Current and former UC Davis students must also upload a UC Davis transcript. You can find your transcript online at SISWeb or MyUCDavis (please do not use OASIS transcripts).
  • Three letters of recommendation - Instructions are provided with the online application. All letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically by the referee. The online application will automatically notify the referee and provide instructions on how to submit the letter.

  • Application fee - A graduate application fee is required for all applicants. It is $135 (U.S. applicants) or $155 (international applicants). The application fee is not refundable and must be paid before the application can be reviewed. Instructions for payment will appear when you submit your online application.
  • TOEFL/IELTS Scores - English language testing is required for all applicants whose native language and primary language of instruction is not English. UC Davis accepts both the TOEFL and IELTS examinations. For more information about these tests, please go to the TOEFL/IELTS Requirement section. The TOEFL code for UC Davis is 4834 and Department code 07.
  • In the prerequisite section of the application, please list all biology, biochemistry, and microbiology related coursework along with the received grade. Examples of course that should be listed include: biology, genetics, immunology, ecology, microbiology, bacteriology, virology, related laboratory courses, etc).
  • CV - Your CV/resume should help the committee better understand your specific experiences in microbiology beyond what you shared in your statement of purpose or personal history.

The graduate group cannot review an application until all of the above components are received. Inquiries concerning application procedures or any other aspects of the program and requests for forms for admission to graduate study should be directed to the MGG program coordinator.

GRE scores are no longer required for admission consideration.

M.S. Plan I

Students who apply for admission in the M.S. program in Microbiology must meet the following criteria: Applicant must identify a major professor prior to applying for admission and applicant must cover all costs associated with the M.S. degree. Once identified, the major professor must provide a letter of support for the applicant to the MGG admissions committee. All costs associated with the M.S. program in Microbiology Graduate Program are the responsibility of the applicant.
